About Stamen Animal Hospital

The history of Stamen Animal Hospital begins in nineteenth century Eastern Europe. There, in a little Russian town a boy by the name of Harry Clarence Stamen was born. Fleeing religious persecution, he emigrated to the United Sates when he was only six years old. Whether his interest in working with animals grew from his homeland or while growing up in a rural Massachusetts town (Chelsea), is not clear. What is clear is Harry’s devotion to the veterinarian profession. In fact, prior to enlisting with the US Army, Harry worked as a cow tester according to census records.
Upon leaving the service he would attend and later graduate from Ohio State University Veterinary School, one of the first veterinarian schools in the country. After briefly working in Providence RI in the early and mid twenties he came to settle in New Rochelle, NY in 1927. On January 27, 1927 he obtained a license from New York State and began practicing veterinary medicine at his home located at 34 Woodside Place. Adjacent to his home was a glass house which he later converted into a separate structure for practicing veterinary medicine. Unfortunately, due to a very brief illness which lasted only ten days, Dr. Stamen died suddenly on May 4, 1941 at the age of 44.
Briefly after his death, Dr. Stamen’s associate, Dr. Seymour G. Notarius purchased the practice on July 11, 1941. Dr. Notarius ran the practice at the same location for an additional ten years until the state of New York forced him to sell to make way for the coming of the New England Thruway (Interstate 95). Dr. Notarius soon after found a new location on the other side of town, 61 Quaker Ridge Road, its present day location.
The new building had its start in 1926 as part of the Wykagyl Supply Company storing masonry supplies. At some point between 1926 and 1952, it was taken over by Quaker Ridge Chickeries, Inc. which used the building to house chickens. Dr. Notarious converted the building into an Animal Hospital in 1953 and kept the uncharacteristically low ceilings. The esthetics of the building has not changed much since 1953. In fact, it looks strikingly similar to the image on the brochure Dr. Notarius mailed out to his clients upon its opening in 1953.
By 1964, Dr. Notarius decided to retire and sold the practice to Dr. Richard Jogodnik, his associate. Dr. Jogodnik ran the practice successfully for nearly 40 years. In addition to providing quality healthcare for forty years, he is credited for also establishing the hospital’s logo. Upon his death, Dr. Maria Violi acquired the practice and has been continuing the tradition of excellence ever since.
